What is a tiered golf pool?
A tiered pool keeps everyone from loading up on the same favourites. The field is sorted by the betting odds and cut into four tiers. Each entrant picks exactly one golfer from each. Everyone gets one star, and the pool is decided by who finds the best dark horse and long shot.
It's the easiest pool to explain at the office: four picks, one tournament, lowest score wins.
The four tiers
| Tier | Who's in it | Odds rank |
|---|---|---|
| Tier A | The favourites | 1–6 |
| Tier B | Contenders | 7–16 |
| Tier C | Dark horses | 17–32 |
| Tier D | Long shots | 33 and beyond |
How to play
- Join or start a league for the tournament and share the invite link.
- Pick one golfer from each tier, A through D.
- Lock it before the first tee time.
- Follow along live. Your four golfers' scores to par are added together on the leaderboard.
- Lowest combined score wins. Ties go to whoever has the best single finish.
Example card
Here's how a finished card adds up:
| Tier | Golfer | Score to par |
|---|---|---|
| A | The pre-tournament favourite | −6 |
| B | A top-15 contender | −3 |
| C | A dark horse with good course history | −1 |
| D | A long shot who sneaks into the top 20 | −2 |
| Combined | −12 | |
The Tier D golfer outscored the Tier C pick. That's typical: the bottom tiers are where pools are won and lost.
Tiered Picks strategy
Tier A is the least important pick
Most of your league will take one of the top two or three favourites, so your Tier A pick rarely separates you from the pack. Taking the fourth or fifth favourite is a cheap way to be different.
Tiers C and D decide the pool
The spread between the best and worst golfers is widest in the bottom tiers. Spend your research time there: course history, recent form, and how well each golfer's game suits the course.
Avoid golfers likely to miss the cut
Every stroke counts toward your combined total. A steady golfer who plays all four rounds is often worth more than a boom-or-bust long shot.
